Gordes Frobenius honed his craft over several vintages under the tutelage of two luminaries of the Burgundy wine world: the venerable Eric Rousseau of Domaine Armand Rousseau and the revered Jean-François Germain, affectionately known as 'the grower's grower,' at Henri Germain.
Seasonality and terroir are the defining qualities of 1683 Wines, which are expressive yet delicately austere, always striving for the perfect balance of intensity and elegance. And in the tradition of Burgundy, the lucidity of single varieties is prized over blends. Not quite Old World and not quite New World, our wines display the best qualities of both.
Tasting Note: Crafted from hand-picked Cabernet Franc grown in the cool maritime climate of Wilyabrup, Margaret River, the 2020 Loin du Clos is an elegant and beautifully structured expression of this noble variety. Gentle cold soaking, indigenous yeast fermentation and extended maturation in carefully selected Burgundian French oak produce a wine of remarkable finesse and depth.
Aromas of ripe blackberry, black plum and wild raspberry are lifted by fragrant violet, dried herbs and subtle pencil shavings. The palate is supple yet finely structured, revealing layers of dark berry fruit, cocoa, graphite and savoury spice supported by silky, fine-grained tannins and vibrant natural acidity. The finish is long, poised and mineral, combining purity of fruit with impressive elegance and ageing potential. Decanting is recommended to reveal the wine's full aromatic complexity.
